About the Graphic Novel
Detention was supposed to be boring. Set in 2005 in a declining Rust Belt city, The Council of Forgotten Heroes follows Billy, an illiterate fifth grader with a knack for getting into trouble. When Billy skips detention for the nth time and his teacher calls his mother, Billy learns that if he doesn’t straighten up, he will have to repeat fifth grade. Reluctantly, Billy finds himself back where he least wants to be: the school’s dusty, abandoned library where detention hours are served.
Billy has a secret: he can’t read. Years of hiding this truth have left him frustrated, insecure, and constantly clashing with teachers, his parents, and his crush, Doreen, the brightest student in class. Every failed assignment and every bad decision only deepens the hole he’s dug for himself, and the library, filled with the very books that remind him of what he can’t do, feels like a punishment designed just for him.
But one afternoon, as the autumn light spills through the dusty window blinds, something unexpected happens. Out of the stillness of the library, three legendary characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz step off the page. Then follow Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Then the ghosts of A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet, and more. The library isn’t just a forgotten room any longer. It’s a doorway to the stories themselves. One by one, characters from history and literature cross paths with Billy, each encounter pushing him to confront the things he’s been avoiding.
As Billy slowly faces his fears about reading and being “different,” he learns to see—literally and figuratively—what he’s been missing. His confidence grows, and with it, his determination to change.
Billy’s transformation doesn’t happen in isolation. His courage inspires those around him to see the long-forgotten school library in a new light. By reopening and breathing life back into it, Billy sets off a quiet revolution. What began as punishment becomes the start of a new chapter—not just for Billy, but for everyone who walks through the library doors.
The Council of Forgotten Heroes is a heartwarming graphic novel that blends humor, magic, and self-discovery. At its core, it’s a tale about the power of stories themselves—how they shape us, teach us, and open doors to worlds we never knew we could enter.
